Dónde celebrar una boda en Gipuzkoa
Gipuzkoa has something especially appealing when it comes to celebrating a wedding: within just a few kilometres you can go from a farmhouse surrounded by nature to a palace, a church in the middle of an old town or a venue overlooking the sea.
And from a photography point of view, that matters.
Not because there are places where it's impossible to take good photos, but because every venue shapes, in some way, how a wedding is lived and how it is told. The light, the outdoor areas, the distance between ceremony and banquet, the places where guests gather or even what happens if it starts to rain all end up becoming part of the story.
After photographing weddings in Gipuzkoa, there are some places we always love going back to, and others that, although very different from one another, have something special.
Olentzo: probably our favourite place to celebrate a wedding in Gipuzkoa.

If we had to choose one of our favourite places to hold both the ceremony and the banquet, it would probably be Olentzo.
Some venues work beautifully in photos but turn out to be less comfortable during a wedding, and others are very practical but visually offer fewer possibilities. At Olentzo we think there's an especially lovely balance between the two.
The outdoor area is one of its great attractions. There's greenery, different corners and enough space for each group to find its place naturally during the cocktail hour. For us that's especially interesting because it lets us work in a very documentary way: moving among the guests, observing and finding scenes without constantly having to take people to specific spots.
But probably one of the things we like most about Olentzo is that the interior doesn't feel like just the backup plan for bad weather. It has a personality of its own.
The stone, the wood, the farmhouse architecture and its historic character make it genuinely beautiful when the wedding ends up moving indoors. In Gipuzkoa, that's no small detail.
You can spend months planning a beautiful outdoor ceremony and wake up on the wedding day to a completely different sky from the one you imagined. Having a place where both the outdoor and indoor plans work well gives a lot of peace of mind and, from our perspective, plenty of photographic possibilities too. That's why Olentzo would probably be our first recommendation for couples looking for nature, a venue with character and the chance to hold most of the wedding in one place.
Igartza Palace: a beautiful place for a ceremony
For a civil ceremony, one of the places we love most is Igartza Palace, in Beasain.

Here the feeling is completely different. Igartza has the kind of architecture that doesn't need much decoration to work; the space itself already brings texture, depth and a very particular atmosphere. Photographically, we especially like places that keep their identity, because they let the images also explain where the wedding took place.
A photograph of a ceremony doesn't have to show only two people exchanging rings; it can also show the architecture, the guests, the arrivals and exits, the light of the place and those little things happening all around. In a space like Igartza it's worth widening the frame and letting the place become part of the story too.
What's more, the surroundings let you keep taking photos naturally, without turning the moment after the ceremony into a particularly long session. For couples looking for a ceremony with history, personality and a different setting, it's one of the places we'd definitely keep in mind.

Getting married in Hondarribia: a church with a whole old town around it
For a religious ceremony, Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano, in Hondarribia, has something hard to find elsewhere, and curiously it isn't just the church. It's everything that happens before and after you walk in.
Arriving on foot through the old streets of Hondarribia, crossing the historic quarter and finding the church at the end of the walk gives the entrance to the ceremony itself a great deal of character. Something similar happens on the way out: you're not in a car park or in front of a road, but inside one of the most recognisable old towns in Gipuzkoa. Narrow streets, stone, balconies, different levels, passers-by and small squares create a fantastic setting to keep photographing the wedding without having to move straight on to another place.
And that fits very well with the way we work. We don't need to take the couple around twenty locations for an hour; often it's enough to walk with them for a little while as they talk, take in what has just happened or bump into family and friends. Hondarribia allows exactly that: for the place to be part of the photos without becoming the absolute protagonist.
Basilica of Santa María Magdalena in Errenteria: small, intimate and full of character
Not every wedding needs a huge church.
In fact, for small celebrations the opposite is often true: a more intimate space makes the ceremony feel much closer.
The Basilica of Santa María Magdalena in Errenteria is one of those places we like precisely because of its scale and that sense of intimacy. For a wedding with few guests it can work especially well.
From a photographic point of view, distances change at small ceremonies. People are closer to one another, reactions feel nearer and it's easier to create photos in which different generations or different stories appear within the same frame; we don't always need large spaces. Sometimes a small church full of important people has far more impact than a spectacular half-empty building.

Hotel María Cristina: a completely different wedding
If Olentzo stands for nature and farmhouse character, Hotel María Cristina in San Sebastián is practically at the opposite end.
And that's exactly why we like it too.
Its function rooms have an enormous presence. High ceilings, large windows, chandeliers, columns and all that classical architecture make the interior a key part of the photographs. It's an especially interesting venue for couples looking for an elegant, more urban wedding. And here, working indoors doesn't necessarily mean losing photographic possibilities. Quite the opposite. In some interiors you're constantly trying to hide walls, lights or distracting elements. At the María Cristina it's often the other way round: you want to include them.

We like being able to step back and let the rooms become part of the composition. Perhaps its biggest difference from the other options on this list is outdoor space. If you imagine a wedding built around large gardens, there are probably more suitable alternatives.
But if you're drawn to celebrating your wedding in the heart of San Sebastián and you're looking for elegant, historic and very photogenic interiors, it's hard not to consider it.
Chillida Leku: for a different kind of wedding
Some places instantly create different images, and Chillida Leku, in Hernani, is one of them. The blend of nature, Basque architecture and Eduardo Chillida's sculptures creates a setting that's very hard to mistake for any other. The garden allows us to work with lots of space and with compositions where landscape, people and sculptures share the same photograph. And the Zabalaga farmhouse brings a completely different contrast. We find it especially interesting for couples who want to move away from the usual look of a wedding estate. That said, with venues like this it's worth checking the specific conditions for a celebration, capacity, timings and permitted uses directly before building your whole wedding idea around the place, but as a visually unique space in Gipuzkoa, it's worth getting to know.
San Telmo in Zumaia: a small hermitage above the sea
And there's one place that inevitably comes to mind when we think of a small chapel in front of a spectacular landscape: the San Telmo hermitage, in Zumaia. Standing above Itzurun beach, practically on the edge of the flysch cliffs, it has something we particularly love: scale. The hermitage is small and simple, while the landscape around it is immense, and that contrast can be beautiful.
We wouldn't include it in the same way as Olentzo or Hotel María Cristina, since you'd need to check beforehand whether a ceremony can actually be held there and what permits are required, but as a special location it deserves its place in this selection.
Zumaia also allows something we always try to look for whenever we can: that couple portraits don't become an activity completely separate from the wedding. There's no need to turn the flysch into an hour-long editorial shoot; often a short walk, a bit of wind and the sea in the background are enough to let the landscape become part of the story naturally.

We wouldn't choose a venue just because it looks good in photos
After talking about light, architecture, gardens and landscapes this may sound contradictory, but it's probably the most important advice in the whole article: we wouldn't choose a wedding venue solely because it looks good in photos. A wedding is lived before it's photographed. Think about your guests. About distances.
Think about what will happen if it rains, where you'll be during the cocktail hour, whether you want to move a hundred people from one place to another or would rather everything happens in the same place and, above all, how you imagine your wedding when there's no photographer around.
Because when a place works for you, it usually starts working in the photos too. People are more comfortable, they have time to talk, things happen spontaneously and we can focus on observing, anticipating and photographing what is really happening, instead of constantly trying to manufacture situations.
So, where should you celebrate a wedding in Gipuzkoa?
We don't believe there's one perfect place for every wedding; each couple imagines their day differently and the venue should support that way of celebrating.
If you're looking for nature and want to enjoy the ceremony and celebration in the same setting, Olentzo would be one of our favourites. For a civil ceremony surrounded by architecture and history, we find Igartza especially beautiful, while if you imagine a religious ceremony inside one of Gipuzkoa's old towns with the most personality, Hondarribia has a great deal to offer.
For a small, intimate wedding, the Basilica of La Magdalena in Errenteria has a completely different character. If, on the other hand, you picture an elegant, urban celebration in San Sebastián, Hotel María Cristina plays in another aesthetic league. Places like Chillida Leku or the surroundings of San Telmo in Zumaia also show that Gipuzkoa offers possibilities for weddings that are completely different from one another.
In our wedding photography stories you can see how we work in some of these places and how each venue ends up becoming part of the story without taking it over.
In the end, the question shouldn't just be which place is the most beautiful, but which of these places can we truly imagine our wedding in? Because the venue will of course appear in the photos, but what really matters is everything that happens inside it.
If you've already found your venue — or you're still deciding — and you'd like us to be there to tell the story, you can get to know DOVA Studio or tell us how you imagine your wedding.
